Use of mobile devices in the Commons Public Gallery (trial period)

Commons Chamber
28 November 2015

The Speaker of the House of Commons has agreed that, for a three-month trial period starting on 30 November 2015, visitors attending the Public Gallery in the Commons Chamber will be able to use mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) to access social media during sittings.

This is part of the implementation of the following recommendation in the report of the Speaker's Commission on Digital Democracy:

"The Commission recommends that the current restrictions on members of the public taking mobile electronic devices into the House of Commons chamber and Westminster Hall debates are removed."

A number of pilots have already taken place in Westminster Hall, when there has been a linked digital debate online or a debate on an e-petition.

Use of laptops, photography and telephone calls are still not permitted in the Commons Public Gallery.
