Parliamentarians in the First World War

This oil painting by French artist, Leopold Braun shows the House of Commons debating chamber in 1914, just before the outbreak of the First World War in July that year. The Great War was to continue for a further four years.

The painting was presented as a gift to the Speaker, William Morrison by Mr Marshall Field, a Chicago department store owner in 1953.

Among the MPs depicted are Herbert Henry Asquith, David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Andrew Bonar Law, Arthur Balfour, Keir Hardie and Ramsay MacDonald.
