Sustainable Development Goals inquiry

Inquiry status: open Inquiry timeline

Oral evidence ongoing.

Scope of the inquiry

The SDGs were agreed by UN Member States at the Sustainable Development Summit in New York 23-27 September 2015.  World leaders, including UK Prime Minister David Cameron, attended the Summit pledging commitment to the achievement of the 17 Goals and 169 Targets by 2030.

The agreed set of SDGs are more ambitious than the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which expire at the end of 2015. They have a much broader scope and are designed to be universal and applicable to both developing and developed countries. The SDGs take a more holistic approach to development, addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality in order to bring transformative change that will ‘leave no one behind’.

Now that the Goals are agreed, the Committee is inquiring into how they will or should be implemented by DFID and the wider UK Government.
