Train the Trainer

Learn how to empower others to engage with Parliament. If your organisation, those you work with or your community would benefit from a better understanding of Parliament and how to engage effectively with it, the Train the Trainer programme may be for you.

What is Train the Trainer?

The aim of the Train the Trainer programme is to support organisations that want to access and deliver Parliamentary training, enabling their members and communities to learn about and engage with the work and processes of Parliament.

What will participants learn?

Participants will learn to facilitate a programme of training about Parliament consisting of 11 modules. Subject areas covered include:

  • What is democracy?
  • An introduction to Parliament
  • An introduction to government
  • The work of the House of Commons
  • The work of the House of Lords
  • How a law is made
  • Keep it local or make it national?
  • How to engage effectively
  • Select Committees
  • The devolved assemblies (optional)
  • The relationship between Parliament and Europe (optional)

Course learning materials

Trainers will be provided with course materials to help them deliver sessions about Parliament. These include a session plan, materials to support group exercises and presentations for each of the 11 modules. There is also a list of suggested background reading for trainers and delegates.

The materials are designed to be adapted to different learning styles and can be used either as a stand-alone tool-kit or be incorporated into existing programmes.

Materials have been designed in accordance with ‘Accelerated Learning’ best practice and ongoing support is available to all organisations that join the Train the Trainer programme. Use of the resources is subject to a user agreement.

Course duration

The Train the Trainer course takes place over two days. Participants will have the chance to familiarise themselves with the content of the resources and experience all of the different activities they support. There is also the opportunity to gain experience delivering the materials within the group.

Who have we trained?

Pam Hill, Skillshare North East:

"I’ve been a trainer for twenty years and it’s one of the best resources I’ve ever come across. It’s beautifully laid out, easy to use, with lots of information. When you’re a trainer you’re looking for something that isn’t complicated but contains all the information you need, and this is the resource for you."

Laura Stone, Voluntary Sector North-West:

"The materials that we have been able to take from Parliamentary Outreach have been invaluable. It’s really helped us deliver the outcomes of our project. Now I can use the materials and go into a neighbourhood and they can influence for themselves as well."

Sue Hooper-Lawrie, Exeter CVS:

"The learning on the course was phenomenal. At the beginning most of us believed all we could do was write to our MP, but so many other options are available and that excited people."
