The Government has made a number of changes to this designed to strengthen enforcement powers, to change the definition of a traveller for planning purposes, and to give greater protection to green belt areas. 24.01.2014Ethnic Minorities in Politics and Government
Following the 2010 General Election there were 27 black and minority ethnic MPs, 12 more than before the election, but they make up only 4.2% of all MPs. Therefore the Commons remains disproportionate compared to 12.9% of the UK population from a non-white background.
20.12.2013The Prawer-Begin Plan
There has been a lot of controversy about the Prawer-Begin plan to relocate some of Israel's semi-nomadic Bedouin population to approved towns, with the UN Human Rights Council saying that it violates Bedouin rights and is discriminatory. In December it was announced that the bill would be substantially amended after opposition from both left- and right-wing politicians in the Knesset.

However, there is continued interest in the representativeness of the House, as currently composed. This Library Note provides background information on this subject: it summarises existing research on the representation in the House of Lords of minority ethnic groups, religions and disability, and sets out some of the challenges in collecting and interpreting this information.
