Compared to other advanced economies the UK is forecast to have greater than average government borrowing, structural borrowing and net debt as a % of GDP in 2015. Its gross debt is forecast to be below the average for advanced economies as a % of GDP.

This note provides international comparisons of government borrowing and debt from 2008 to 2020. Data are presented for overall borrowing and structural borrowing.  Public debt figures are provided on both gross and net measures.

The data are from the IMF Fiscal World Economic Outlook Database, updated in October 2015. Other organisations, such as the OECD and European Commission, also publish international comparisons of the public finances.
