About the Crown and Parliament tour and workshop

Please note that this visit is available to UK schools only.

KS2 History

If you had lived in the time of King John, would you have had the same rights and representation you do now? Through events such as the signing of the Magna Carta, the English Civil War, the rebuilding of The Palace of Westminster and the modern day State Opening of Parliament, students explore how the relationship between the monarchy and UK Parliament has changed over time.

This will support a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066 i.e. the changing power of monarchs.

Your school's constituency MP will be informed of your visit and they will be invited along to meet your pupils. The MP’s attendance is subject availability in Westminster at the time of your visit. Please note that during the Dissolution and General Election period in April and early May 2015, there will be no MPs in Parliament, so the Education Service will be unable to invite them to your visit if it falls during this time.

NB: Parliament is a working building and access to different parts of the Palace of Westminster, as part of your tour, will vary due to Parliamentary business.

Your visit might include:

  • The House of Commons and/or House of Lords chambers
  • A visit to the Commons and/or Lords gallery to observe the MPs or Lords debating
  • Central Lobby, at the very heart of the Parliamentary Estate.
  • St. Stephen’s Hall, the home of the original House of Commons
  • Westminster Hall, the last remaining part of the original Palace
