Role

The Committee of Privileges is appointed to consider specific matters relating to privileges referred to it by the House.

Parliamentary privilege grants certain legal immunities for Members of both Houses which allow them to perform their duties without interference from outside the House.

Joint Committee on Parliamentary Privilege 1999

In July 1997 the Joint Committee on Parliamentary Privilege was set up with broad terms of reference ‘to review parliamentary privilege and make recommendations’; it formed part of the initiative to modernise Parliament.

Joint Committee on Parliamentary Privilege 2013

In late 2012/early 2013 the Joint Committee on Parliamentary Privilege was set up to consider the Government’s Green Paper on Parliamentary Privilege.
