UK residents and overseas visitors can book tickets for specialist fully guided tours focusing on the architecture and the ‘Women in Parliament’ art exhibition inside Portcullis House.

What does the tour cover?

This is an opportunity to see inside Portcullis House, the only new building commissioned by Parliament since the Palace of Westminster in the 19th century. It was designed by leading British architect Michael Hopkins and officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in February 2001.

A new exhibition ‘Women in Parliament: works from the Parliamentary Art Collection’ will be displayed in Portcullis House in 2015.

Tour highlights include:

  • Portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the first woman Prime Minister
  • Portrait of Betty Boothroyd, the first woman speaker
  • Portrait of Dawn Primarolo MP, the latest portrait to be commissioned
  • Hunger-strike medal awarded to a suffragette
  • A bust of Nancy Astor, the first woman MP

The exhibition, which includes oil paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture, investigates the role and influence women have had in Parliament from the 19th century to today. The tours take about 75 minutes and include a visit to the first floor Committee Corridor of Portcullis House.

Tours are occasionally subject to variation or cancellation due Parliamentary business.
