By researching the records of Sunderland Corporation our group were able to find out about how the local administration was trying to improve public health in Sunderland from the 1830s onwards.
Although our group found the names of many people involved with the improvement of public health in Sunderland, a couple of names appeared repeatedly.
Nuisances were a huge problem, not just in Sunderland but throughout the country.
The provision of public baths and washhouses was an important aspect of the improvement of public health in the nineteenth century.
Housing was one area where tensions arose between the rights of the landowner and the rights of their tenants to a healthy environment.
