Teachers' seminars


These free one-day seminars and twilight CPD sessions at the Houses of Parliament are designed for teachers, trainee teachers and education professionals. They will give you new ideas for approaching general Citizenship and political literacy lessons or more in-depth Government & Politics topics.

Seminars often include talks from current members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.*

Lunch and refreshments are provided. Travel expenses are covered for those teaching in the state sector or working in the voluntary/charitable education sector (subject to terms and conditions).

* Please note that seminar itineraries may occasionally need to be rearranged at short notice due to the varied nature of parliamentary business.

PGCE/PGDE seminars

Designed as an introduction to how Parliament works for those training to teach Citizenship, Modern Studies and related subjects, PGCE/PGDE seminars include a tour of the Palace of Westminster and classroom activity sessions. They also include a Q&A with Parliamentarians where possible.

General seminars

Designed to provide an overview of Parliament for teachers, trainees and other education professionals working within Citizenship or related subjects, general seminars include a tour of the Palace of Westminster, Q&A sessions with Parliamentarians and a look at Education Service resources, events and programmes.

General seminar dates available in 2014-2015:

  • Tuesday 9 December 2014, 9am-4pm (full day) 
  • Tuesday 24 February 2015, 9am-4pm (full day)
  • Tuesday 3 March 2015, 4-7pm (twilight)
  • Monday 11 May 2015, 9am-4pm (full day)

A level specialist seminars

Designed for those already teaching subjects such as A level Government & Politics, specialist seminars take the form of both whole day and twilight sessions. They provide a range of in-depth sessions with a focus on specific topics relating to the work of Parliament, chosen to reflect areas of the A level syllabus. Previous specialist seminar topics have included elections and participation, voting systems, building a coalition, women in politics, the UK in Europe and devolution. They can also include an optional tour of the Palace of Westminster (available on full day seminars only).
