Public Meeting to Launch Local Clean Air Campaign Tonight

I have convened a meeting of our recenty established local Community Planning Forum this evening (Thursday 29th November)to launch a local Clean Air Campaign this evening. The meeting is open to the public. It is to be held at the Youth Ctntre at the rear of Botwell Catholic Church in Botwell Lane in Hayes at 8pm. Simonn Birkett, Founder and Director of the national CLean Air Campaign, is coming to talk to us about air pollution, its effects and hwo we can tackle this problem. We have linked up with air pollution experts from the local council and will be working with them to produce local policies to address this problem and to identify the issues that we need to campaign on at a national level. We now know that 4000 people in London alone die each year as a result of air pollution and that parts of our area in the south of the borough are amongst the most air polluted areas in the whole country. Too many local people are suffering and dieing of respiratory conditiosn to allow this air pollution to continue to effect our lives in this way. Come along tonight or contact me if you want to learn more about our campaign and join in activties over the coming year.

John Raises Child Poverty and Cuts to Benefits for Disabled Children with Prime Minister

Yesterday at Prime Minister’s Question Time, I raised the issue of child poverty with the Prime Minister. Research by the charity, Save the Children, revealed that one in seven children in our country do not have a warm coat this winter and to make matters worse the Government is cutting the additional child benefit that 100,000 families with disabled children receive. I said to the Prime Minister that whatever one thought was the cause of our current economic problems surely it wasn’t right that the poorest and most vulnerable children should be paying the most for the economic crisis. Mr Cameron failed to answer my question and replied with a standard reply about removing child benefit from people earning over £60,000. It wasn’t these people that I was referring to. It was ordinary families caring for chilldren with disabilities. Whether he misunderstood the question or deliberately obfuscated I leave to people’s owen judgement. I am going to keep pressing on the issue of child poverty, especially the problems children with disabilities are facing because we have a responsibility to ensure that they are not forced to pay for a crisis that they certainly didn’t cause.
