START THE WEEK: Catching up with my team, constituents and local groups - my first week of the Parliamentary recess

Monday 23rd July - This is the first week of the Parliamentary recess and this week I'll be catching up the team in my constituency office, constituents and local groups. You can read the full blog here. In this week's blog you can also find out why I'm doing a sponsored walk next week with Tory MP Guy Opperman.

My co-authored article in the Sunday Times: Let's Take the Politics out of International Students

Monday 9th July - Yesterday I co-wrote an article in the Sunday Times with Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi, making the case to follow our international competitors and take students out of the net migration targets. I've been campaigning on the issue for over a year, working with our two universities in Sheffield and with Universities UK, and trying to build a cross-party approach to the issue. You can read our article here. Do get in touch to let me know what you think.

My speech on the Future of Apprenticeships

Thursday 5th July -  This morning I gave a keynote speech at a conference in London on the future of Apprenticeships. As a member of the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee I gave an address on the key findings from the Select Committee's ongoing inquiry into Apprenticeships.

In my speech I argued that the rising tide of youth unemployment can be tackled by providing greater support and encouragement to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to take on apprentices. I also spoke about the need for the UK to be more ambitious in our attitude towards apprenticeships and aim for more apprentices to study to level 3 and beyond. You can read and download a copy of my speech here.

I want to hear from Sheffield businesses about your experiences with the banks

Tuesday 3rd July - On Tuesday 17th July the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, which I'm a member of, is holding a special one-off evidence session to review Government action on bank lending. We'll be quizzing Business Secretary Vince Cable about what the Government is doing to press banks to support businesses and encourage growth, and I want to hear from Sheffield businesses.

To grow our way out of recession successful businesses need to be able to access finance to invest, develop their business and create jobs. However, I've come across strong Sheffield businesses that have struggled to get loans. If your business has been refused a loan or credit by the banks then I want to hear from you. I'll then put the concerns of Sheffield businesses directly to Vince Cable.

The taxpayer owns significant chunks of our biggest banks and the Government should be using its influence as a major shareholder to put pressure on the banks to lend more to successful businesses. We all know that since the financial crisis the banks have been more cautious and less willing to lend. This is understandable, but the combined impact of banks becoming overly risk adverse and the Government not doing enough to encourage lending is having a detrimental effect on local jobs and growth.

Cafe Culture event with Caroline Flint on 13th July: 'Jobs and Growth in a Low Carbon Economy'

The Government claims to be 'the greenest ever' yet I think they're failing to tackle climate change. My view is that rebalancing our economy and tackling climate change can go hand in hand. The Government could create thousands of green manufacturing jobs by investing in renewable energy and improving energy efficiency in homes, buildings and transport systems. On Friday 13th July Labour's Shadow Climate Change Secretary Caroline Flint will be leading a debate on these issues called 'Jobs and Growth in a Low Carbon Economy' at the Harland Cafe on John Street. The event is free with Caroline Flint speaking at 7.00pm. The cafe will stay open from 5pm if you would like to have some food beforehand.

All of the details are at http://www.harlandcafe.co.uk/2012/05/cafe-culture-events - I'm going and it would be great to see you there.
